So with this wonderful website up, we thought we’d remind you all how we came into the business of event management, and how we came to win all the awards we did.
It all started about 20 years ago, when Sam Welply came fresh out of university where he was running parties for friends. He realised that party planning could be a viable business and so started the company, Wellpleased Events (a play on his name, did you spot that?) with his brother, Guy.
The first event they managed was a party for Bradford & Bingley Bank in Yorkshire (remember them? think they’re long gone); it was a corporate event for their staff and this was where Sam and Guy cut their teeth.
The first years saw them manage events across the UK in the larger cities; they organised a BMW car launch in Manchester, a Bar Mitzvah in Birmingham (love the way that sounds!), two brand launches for a drinks manufacturer in Edinburgh, and several large conferences for financial sector companies in London. Then came their first festival which was held in Newquay, Cornwall and their first wedding which was quite a learning curve given that it was for a fashion designer and was in the middle of the countryside!
Guy took a step back from the business to start a resort in Thailand (have a peek here, it’s a gorgeous and is currently rated no. 1 in the WORLD on TripAdvisor) which Sam is also partner in.Sam continued to grow the business, moving from his premises in Hirst Yard in Leeds to the current offices in Blayds Yard. He invested in larger warehouses which are now home to hundreds of props, thousands of sets of event furniture which are available for hire, many bars that we have made for various events, and of course thousands of chandeliers, trees, candles. The warehouse also now forms the workshop where our production team design and make the stage sets, exhibition stands, bespoke furniture and props which are made for each event.
Sam continued to expand Wellpleased’s clientele, not alone, but with a strong creative team of talented event managers who work alongside the production team. The ethos has always been to surprise guests and clients with something both innovative and cutting edge; Wellpleased Events always try to add value even in places where clients least expect it; it might be a Tuk Tuk turning up at an Indian Wedding to take the Bride and Groom from the marquee to the Hotel, or it might be a real snow machine brought in to make the Christmas Party just that extra bit special. Sam then developed the business by investing in new event technology. The team now provide 3D event design walk-throughs, so that clients can walk through the event we designed before they’ve even signed on the dotted line! That might be why clients keep coming back; one of our clients has used us for 15 years to create their charity gala dinners and each year we raise more than the last. Just a decade ago we branched out into working in partnership with brands to help them make a success of their launch through experiential marketing and brand marketing. Crabbies is a great case study (have a look here) where we started managing events at the Ideal Home Show in London, Glasgow and Birmingham when they were new to the market. We were then hired as their event management company in Dublin, Bournemouth and Liverpool too until they reached no. 1 ale sku in the UK! We now work for their parent company on their other brands.
More recently, Wellpleased have branched out into international sports event management. This year we created the Tour de France Grand Depart Media Centre in Yorkshire for over 2,000 of the world’s press, cyclists and VIPs; you can see the photos here.
Wellpleased wear many hats, from Event Production company to Wedding Planner to the stars, from Conference Organiser to Exhibition Stand designer but the ethos stays the same, we create exceptional events for corporate and private clients, across the UK and Europe.
